El Coquí

The Coquí fills the evenings in Puerto Rico with its graceful melody, and is dearly missed by Puerto Ricans that are away from home.

The Coquíes begin to sing at sunset, and sing all night until dawn. Some species have a slower chant, while others sing faster and with a higher tone.

The unique chant of the Coquí serves two purposes. The first syllable “co” is for warning nearby males, a “go away” message. The second syllable “qui” is used to attract the female. Only males call during courtship, although both sexes vocalize aggressively against intruders that enter their territory. Males typically call during courtship from 3 to 6 feet above the ground while sitting on a leaf, and female Coquíes travel long distances to answer the male’s calling.

The experience of the Coquí songs is quite unique and found nowhere else in the planet. Click here to hear the night sounds of Puerto Rico.
